What is Yulin Dog Meat Festival?
Yoga Stops Yulin is the first of its kind global fundraiser event for the victims of the annual Lychee and Dog Meat Festival and the broader
Dog Cat Meat Trade - DCMT- that spans across Se Asia.
The Yulin dog meat festival is celebrated annually in Yulin, Guangxi, China, during the summer solstice by eating dog meat and lychees. Roughly 10,000 dog are brutally captured and slaughtered every year. Many are stolen pets with their collars still in place.
The festival began in 2009 as a way for local dog meat butchers & traders to boost waning dog meat sales.
The dog meat butchers and traders proposed the event to the mayor of Yulin as a way to bring economic/tourism activity to a region that is otherwise devoid of any interest.
The festival has drawn criticism both domestically and abroad.
